Join us on an educational journey. Come and see for yourselves how fresh our milk is by petting our cows and seeing our milking RIGHT HERE on our farm! For our tours we offer an inclusive and interactive look at life on a working farm, with everything from the milking parlor to the calf barn to the manure tanks. We are an all-in-one farming operation and love to share our farm with visitors!

What can you expect on an hour-long guided tour?

  • Greeting by your tour guide (staff of SMC)
  • Explanation of the milking parlor
  • Overview of our sustainability efforts
  • A look at our "cow comfort" practices
  • Explanation of silos, crops, grain, and food for our animals
  • How delivery works, including a look inside a delivery truck
  • Meet our famous Animal Planet chicks and calves
  • See the cow maternity ward
  • Visit the calf barn to pet and visit with our calves

Have lunch at our pavilion, let the kids play on our play-set or on the rock pile, pet the animals, walk around, and feel free to ask lots of questions.

HISTORY:

South Mountain Creamery was founded in 2001 by Randy and Karen Sowers, who have been farming together for over 30 years.

As Maryland’s first on-the-farm dairy processing plant, South Mountain Creamery does dairy differently. From the time a calf is born to the time her milk is made into our delicious dairy products, we practice the highest integrity to ensure a quality, responsibly made product.

South Mountain Creamery aims to leave as small a carbon imprint as possible, through being a self-sustaining farm in all of our practices. From our manure injector, to our soybean press that makes animal feed and biodiesel, to wind turbines, solar energy, and geothermal loops to produce natural heat.
